There is no Korean skincare routine that does not include this as part of a weekly or basic routine. From East to West, they expanded all around the world and now, who hasn’t tried this beauty care yet?
They are very easy to use, very pleasant, skin feels wonderful after using them, it helps you to relax, it is perfect for skin boosting, and you can use them at anytime… they are fantastic!
How do they work?
Simple. Thanks to the material they are made of, they seal the serum or the essence into the skin. They boost the properties of the cosmetic ingredients they are soaked in, so if the product is good you will obtain its best and more effective results every time.
After its use, you can apply your current moisturiser for sealing the properties in. Never rinse it off your face. If you feel you have an excess of product do not use a tissue to take it off, instead, tap your face with your fingers until it is completely absorbed.
Let´s try to analyse and understand most of the different types of facial sheet masks.
– By the material they are made of –
If the serum is great but the fabric is not good, we won´t obtain good results. Every brand uses the fabric they think fits better with the kind of facial sheet mask they are creating. In fact, sometimes, depending on the type of mask they choose one or another. But investing in good brands, means investing in good results for your skin.
-.-.- NON-WOVEN FABRIC OR FIBRE -.-.-
Have you ever tried a sheet mask that feels like paper maché? These are the ones. They are not able to properly deliver the serum so they won´t act as they should on your skin because they allow evaporation to occur.
They do not fit well to the face shape and do not stick as they should, so you will need to use them while resting.
-.-.- PULP -.-.-
These are softer than fiber masks although at the end of the day are very similar when talking about the efficacy of delivering the serum and fitting onto the facial contours.
-.-.- MICROFIBER OR COTTON-LIKE -.-.-
These are the most common at the mass market. The fabric feels similar to cotton but they are made with microfiber, although some of them are made from natural fibre. These are soft and breathable and allow a better delivery and absorption of the serum in comparison to the non-woven and pulp masks.
They do not adhere too well, but they are good enough.
-.-.- HYDROGEL -.-.-
They are made of biocompatible polymer network – gelatine like- and result in very good absorption of the serum. Given their material, they have a cooling effect on the skin. They also deliver the properties of the serum into the skin very well because they are not breathable.
They usually come in two parts: the top and the bottom halves. The material what they are made of is very delicate and can be broken easily, but they fit the facial contours perfectly.
-.-.- BIO-CELLULOSE -.-.-
Bio here means: made by a bacteria that ferments glucose. After the bacteria secretes cellulose, it is purified and then begins the process of making the mask.
This type adheres very well to the skin. They are more resistant than hydrogel and fit better than cotton.
In general, they are better than microfiber but still not as good as hydrogel in terms of serum absorption. They deliver the product into the skin really well and do not dry during the application.
They provide great serum absorption and are breathable but do not allow quick evaporation.
-.-.- FOIL SHEET -.-.-
These are not only sheets of foil, but one side has the usual mask and the other side is made of aluminum foil.
They are not breathable so they avoid the evaporation of the serum. They keep the moisture of the mask during the entire length of the treatment.
They do not have the cooling sensation of another kind of masks. On the contrary, these keep inside the mask the warm of your own face so it gets hotter during application. This helps the serum properties penetrate the skin.
-.-.- KNIT MASK -.-.-
They look like a t-shirt and not a winter scarf. They are longer and heavier than the traditional masks. They cover the neck so that’s great. They are made of real cotton and help to leave more moisture and faster than others, and they fit very well.
-.-.- AMPOULE SHEET MASK -.-.-
These give you the ampoule with the serum separately and the sheet mask without mixing them in the envelope. So first you need to apply the ampoule on your face and before it is absorbed you have to put the sheet mask to help the serum get absorbed. The format is this way to keep the properties of the serum well-preserved until the moment of the application.
– By action the serum they content –
Equally important as the material, is the serum or the essence included. They have different uses and masks can generally be classified as:
– Anti-aging:
with collagen, coenzyme Q10, or retinol…
– Brightening:
with vitamin C, resveratrol, or kojic acid…
– Calming and soothing:
with niacinamide (Vitamin B), panthenol, or aloe vera…
– Hydrating:
with hyaluronic acid, glycerine, ceramides, or amino acids…
These are only a few of the types of masks. Now it is your turn to discover all the options (hundreds!) you can find out there!
