In the previous post, you found a small introduction about the history of facial masks. It is interesting to know that from ancient periods our ancestors already used this skincare product. Nowadays, we can find multiple face masks adapted to our necessities in terms of skin type, results, concerns, the time we have…
Classifying masks
Basically, it is possible to classify facemasks into two groups: creamish-based and sheets.
In general, these two big groups require around 20 minutes or less to spread their benefits into the skin. Whatever the case, you always need to refer to the brands’ own instructions. Along with serums, masks are the most effective cosmetic products if you choose a quality mask and you use it properly. So it is a good idea to add this skincare to your routine from 1 to 3 times a week.
It is very important to choose the proper facial mask depending on your skin type: oily, dry, sensitive…
So why don’t we start by categorising masks and analysing what they are good at.
Let´s get started! – By alphabetical order-.
1. Bubbly or Carbonated
-.-.- What this is
Thanks to its carbonated formula, after a few seconds of applying it, starts to bubbling. This provides a gentle massage and, at the same time, spreads its properties, promoting a deep pore cleansing.
-.-.- Action
It is perfect to remove all the dirt inside the pores such us oil, pollution, makeup, etc. Slightly exfoliating and gets rid of dead skin cells too. The skin glows and it can be a good idea to use it in the morning to boost and refresh the face, if you have time.
-.-.- Is good for
Most of the facial skin types: normal, dry, oily or combination.
2. Clay
-.-.- What this is
There are different types depending on their soil origin or their formula. From soft to grained. Usually, they have absorbing properties so are really good to eliminate sebum or incrusted impurities on the skin.
-.-.- Action
Unclogs the pores, eliminates sebum, regulates sweat production, cleans the skin thoroughly.
-.-.- Is good for
Normal to oily skin. If your skin is dry, try mud masks because it is water-based and it won´t dry out your skin.
3. Cream
-.-.- What this is
This is how the classic masks look like: white, thick, creamy… They have emollient properties for smoothing the skin. Later scientists wanted to make a twist and they formulated the gel type, usually a bit translucent, to cover other skin necessities.
-.-.- Action
It has a fast and deep action—moisturising, nourishing and pumping the skin. Perfect for extreme moments of dehydration or dryness.
-.-.- Is good for
Normal when is undernourished to dry skin.
4. Exfoliating
-.-.- What this is
There are different types: physical and chemical for removing dead skin cells. Depending on your skin type and condition, choose the best for you. Bear in mind that scrubbing is the less recommended for sensitive skin and the chemical has to be very light if you have this skin type.
-.-.- Action
These masks are very effective for improving wrinkles, acne, scars, oily skin, and pigmentation. Renewing the top layer of the skin gives the brightness back.
-.-.- Is good for
All skin types but, first, pay attention to the specifications of the mask.
5. Gel
-.-.- What this is
These have a gel consistency formula; they are translucent and very refreshing. You need to apply them in a thick layer exactly the same than the cream masks. In general, these gel types are more suitable for dehydrated, combination or oily skin.
-.-.- Action
They are extremely hydrating, refreshing and soothing. These can be the perfect allied after a long day at the beach to calm down the skin heat and with some sun damage –if you did not protect your skin well.
-.-.- Is good for
They are great for any dehydrated skin type and combination and oily skin.
6. Peel off
-.-.- What this is
These masks usually are formulated as a gel base because they are easy to apply as a thick layer and dry much better. Once dry, peel them off and you get rid off dead cells.
-.-.- Action
These are very well-loved because it is possible to see quick results. Peel off impurities instantly, renew and brighten back the skin.
-.-.- Is good for
Most skin types but those with sensitive skin have to be careful and choose a suitable one.
*** Special mention to charcoal peel off masks***
They stick so strongly to the skin that when you peel them off, they not only take away the impurities and blockages, but also the hydrolipidic film that protects the health of your skin, and the outer layer, including the facial hair. Your skin potentially will be deprived of any protection from harmful external agents.
7. Sheet
-.-.- What this is
It is possible to classify them depending on what material they are made: microfiber, cellulose, silicone, hydrogel, etc. or depending on the serum or essence they are soaked in to get the benefits they give. These are very effective at anytime because the material that the masks are made of helps the cosmetic properties permeate the skin.
-.-.- Action
These are amazing when you need a boost anytime or before any last minute event, in the morning or in the evening… you choose your moment.
-.-.- Is good for
Any skin type. Only select the perfect one for your skin conditions. And choose a good brand with good quality because there is a whole world out there, there are some really really bad ones that can damage your skin.
8. Sleeping
-.-.- What this is
Richer than a night cream, a sleeping mask is applied after the night routine: after your daily cleansing and moisturising skincare. Once applied at the end of your skincare routine, you need to leave it all night long and rinse off the next morning.
-.-.- Action
Because between 10pm to 2am, the skin is more active renewing its cells, these kind of masks are very effective. They act at the right moment so their actives are synchronised with the biological rhythm to achieve the best results.
-.-.- Is good for
All skin types and for any concerns, but for anti-aging, they are the best.
So after this breakdown perhaps you now have a better idea of what you can find at shops and what is better for your skin type.
Is there anything else that I did not include here? Let me know!
